What is Cavity Wall insulation and why should you choose it for your home?

In the UK, houses typically have solid or cavity walls. You can tell the difference and identify which your property has by simply looking at the brick pattern. Alternating lengths of long and short bricks indicate solid walls, whereas an even brick pattern is seen in Cavity walls.

Cavity walls are made up of two walls of brick, with an air space in between; by filling this space with insulation, heat loss is greatly reduced improving energy efficiency as well as saving on energy bills.

Installing of Cavity Wall insulation is a quick and simple process with instant benefits.

Firstly, small holes are drilled into the brickwork of your home in an even pattern. The insulation is then injected, filling the cavity space. Once the walls have been fully insulated, the small holes are filled in and matched to the surrounding brickwork.

The Energy Company Obligation Scheme (ECO)

The main goal of the ECO4 Scheme is to help households who are vulnerable to better heat their home and provide savings on their energy bills. The initiative aims to tackle the millions of households living in Fuel Poverty in the UK by offering services which would ordinarily be expensive to install, as part of a free grant. Cavity Wall Insulation, Loft Insulation or Under Floor insulation are all measures which can provide great benefits to keeping your home warmer, reducing your carbon emissions as well as savings each month on your energy bills.

Small holes are drilled into the brickwork

Small holes are drilled into the brickwork in a specific pattern ready to be injected.

Insulation is injected into the air space

The insulation is then injected into these holes until the space in between has been filled.

Holes are filled in to match surroundings

After the insulation has been injected, the small entrance holes in the wall are filled in to match the surrounding bricks.

Heat loss is significantly reduced

Your home will be kept warmer in winter and cooler in summer, reducing heat loss and your energy bills.

  • Do I have Cavity Walls?

A simple way to check whether you have cavity walls or solid walls is to look at the brick pattern of your home.

Cavity walls have an even brick length pattern whereas solid walls have alternating brick lengths. If you're unsure, click here to find out more.

If your house was built after the 1920's,  then it is likely to have cavity walls. Cavity walls are made up of 2 walls of bricks with a gap of air space in between - this is the cavity.  Solid walls have no cavity.

  • Is Cavity Wall Insulation the right option for me?

Cavity wall insulation is a great option for insulating your home and reducing heat loss.

    Some of the benefits include:

    • Warmer home in winter, cooler in summer
    • Savings on your energy bills
    • Reduced carbon emissions
    • Improved energy efficiency
    • Higher EPC rating for your propety
    • Simple and effective installation

If your house was built in the last 20 years or so, then the walls are likely to have already been insulated; however if you're not sure of this, we can help you.

  • How does Cavity Wall Insulation work?

Around 35% of heat in a home is lost through uninsulated walls.

Insulation material is injected directly into the wall cavity, filling the air space. Doing this traps the heat from inside your home, reducing heat loss and keeping your home warmer overall.

  • Can I get insulation for free (ECO Scheme)?

If you are a homeowner on benefits, and you have cavity walls - you  could qualify for FREE Cavity wall insulation.
